Theme: Jesus Christ, the Bread of Life

Requirements:

  • Participants must be baptized members in J1 or above; J1 students must currently be in 7th grade or above as of March 2019.
  • Participants must attend full time and lodge at church. We cannot accept participants that require time for online classes or have other engagements during the program.
  • Each participant must mail in a completed Participant Consent and Emergency Contact Form.
    • Mail the form to Sis. Lina Pang (P.O. Box 50043, Irvine, CA 92619)
    • Envelope must be postmarked by May 1
    • Registration is not complete until Form has been received
    • We will notify you via e-mail to confirm your registration
  • Each participant must submit their selected project group's placement materials before registration is considered complete; submissions must be made within 3 weeks of registering, or by May 1, whichever comes first.

Logistical Reminders: 

  • Refrain from booking your flight prior to receiving the acceptance e-mail from the coordinators; a link to collect transportation information will be provided within the e-mail.
  • Domestic participants: SNA (John Wayne Airport, Orange County) is the designated arrival and departure airport for events at TJC Irvine. If you wish to fly into a different airport (LAX, LGB, ONT, BUR, etc.), you must first contact mmp2019@tjcmusic.org prior to booking your flight.
  • International participants: Please fly into and depart from either SNA (John Wayne Airport, Orange County)
    or LAX (Los Angeles International Airport).
  • Check-in begins at 4:00 PM, with the Opening Ceremony at 5:00 PM.
  • Participants will receive an acceptance e-mail from coordinators when they have completed registration fully (consent form; project placement materials; registration form); team leads will notify participants of project group placement in the following weeks.

The Music Ministry Program provides a great opportunity for us to serve God together as one body. This year's theme is: Jesus Christ, the Bread of Life. This program is intended to provide an environment for brothers and sisters who are ready to serve in the music ministry to come together to learn about God, fellowship, and create musical resources that can be used to strengthen, teach, and edify members. In addition, some project groups will have the opportunity to evangelize with sacred music.

The program is open to all baptized members currently in J1 or above (that is, currently in 7th grade or above), as of March 2019, including adults. All participants must attend full time and lodge at church. Therefore, we cannot accept or accommodate members who must attend online classes or have other engagements during the program. Interested baptized members should apply here by May 1, 2019.

Purposes:

  • To cultivate workers in the music ministry.
  • To create musical resources to strengthen members' faith and to teach the word of God.
  • To provide opportunities for members to evangelize the word of God through music.

Projects:

  • Choral/Orchestral Conducting: Lead choir/orchestra groups through spiritual worship for the congregation's edification and for evangelism
    • Prepare to lead through spiritual self-edification
    • Learn and practice conducting techniques
    • Choose appropriate music by topic
    • Promote group unity through spiritual discussions
    • Assist the group to understand the spiritual connection between lyrics and music

skills needed: willing heart; proficient in hymn leading (can conduct 2, 3, 4, 6 beats)

  • Memory Verse Composition: Compose and arrange memory verse songs to assist members in memorizing the word of God
    • Prepare to compose through understanding memory verses and spiritual self-cultivation
    • Create simple melodies to promote memory retention
    • Use music to accentuate the spiritual meanings in memory verses

skills needed: can compose, arrange; note: for second-year/advanced applicants (i.e., attended previous MMP Composition project or advanced in arrangement/composing); required materials: laptop

  • Vocal Hymnal Recording: Record hymns from Hymns of Praise in four parts with piano accompaniment to aid members in learning hymns and hymn leading, and for self-cultivation
    • Prepare for 4-part recording through individual practice and spiritual self-cultivation
    • Work as part of a team to provide a unified sound
    • Utilize spiritual understanding of lyrics and musical expression to convey hymn's message accurately

skills needed: adept at sight reading; can learn a hymn in four parts quickly without additional training; can sing on pitch; demonstrates an understanding of how to utilize musical expression to convey spiritual meanings in lyrics

  • Evangelical Praise Team: Lead interactive hymnal sessions to promote spiritual growth in members and to share the word of God through evangelism
    • Prepare to lead through spiritual cultivation and practice with a team
    • Identify appropriate interactive activities for various situations
    • Work as a team to lead the congregation in worshipping in spirit and in truth
    • Teach lyrics and music to others for their spiritual edification
    • Interact with others to build up their faith

skills needed: a heart willing to evangelize; ability to adapt and to interact and engage with others; ability to memorize music and lyrics quickly; ability to teach and motivate others

  • Evangelical Instrumental: Provide spiritually congruent musical accompaniment to promote edification and a deeper understanding of lyrics
    • Prepare to accompany others as part of a team through individual practice and spiritual self-cultivation
    • Discuss with a team about how to elicit or enhance spiritual concepts through musical accompaniment
    • Work as a small group or orchestra to promote spiritual edification

skills needed: fluent in playing an instrument; a heart willing to evangelize

  • Music Program Planning (Senior Class or above only): Learn the process of planning a spiritually edifying worship event by assisting with Music Worship Night and evangelical outreach
    • Music Worship Night
      • Observe/assist in script writing
      • Observe/assist in stage management
    • Evangelical Outreach
      • Assist in flyering
      • Observe/assist in evangelical outreach coordination

skills needed: willing heart; ability to coordinate/manage

We will conclude the Music Ministry Program with an evangelical worship service on Friday, July 12th at 7 PM. Dinner will be provided at 6 PM. We encourage you to invite your friends and family to this special event!

Team leads will notify participants of their project placement in the following weeks.
